Out of Ashes was written for Sunset Jr. High School during the COVID 19 pandemic and is intended to express hope and faith in our ability to overcome life's challenges.

It compares the devastation of a forest fire and the gradual rebirth that occurs, to our own lives and how "through our sorrows and trials" as we continue to find "our grand design and reach for the sky," we will soon see beauty return, and "out of ashes, we will rise!"

The Two-Part and SATB versions are designed to be performed together and will work nicely as a group piece for your concert with all your choirs on stage together!

Text

In the aftermath
Of a forest fire
As we gaze upon the blackened land
Of the mountainside
Oh it's hard to understand
What has happened to the land
What once was green
Will never be again

And the rain that falls
From over head
That would feed the flowers and the trees
Causes mudslides instead
Oh it's hard to comprehend
Why this beauty has to end
For the living forest
Seems to be dead

But out of ashes
The mountainside will live again
Out of ashes
The forest will grow
Though it's painful to see
That things will never be the same
Look around and you'll find
What's about to unwind

It will take some time
For the grass and scrubs and pine
To reveal their grand design
And reach for the sky
Then soon you will learn
That beauty returns
And out of ashes
The forest will rise

When the shadows come
When the darkness falls
When it seems that nothing in your world
Is going right at all
You look away and just pretend
That things are just as you intend
But you wonder if
You'll ever smile again

When the rain that falls
From over head
Seems to wash away your hopes and dreams
And brings you sorrows instead
Oh it's hard to carry on
When you're barely holding on
But the winds of change
are coming with the dawn

For out of ashes
The sun begins to shine again
Out of ashes
Things start to change
And it may be our journeys
Turned out different than we planned
But in time we will see
What's beginning to be

It will take some time
For the feelings to unwind
'Til we'll see our grand design and
Reach for the sky
Then soon we will learn
That beauty returns
And like the forest
We begin to rise

Through sorrows and trials
As we reach for the sky
Out of ashes
We will rise!
