Hello There! I’m Lane

Choral music has been a big part of my life for over 40 years now and the experiences have truly changed my life for the better.

Since early in my life, one of my great passions has been to compose and arrange music (mostly choral music), and to teach others those skills. My hope is that my efforts will help provide opportunities for choir members, audiences, and aspiring choral composers to have life-changing experiences of their own.

My Focus

I compose and arrange different types of music, but I focus on writing and arranging choral music for church, school, community, and university choirs

And since I also enjoy helping others gain the skills of composing and arranging choral music, I am currently teaching a Choral Arranging class for the Music Education Department at Brigham Young University.

How It All Started...

Over 40 years ago, I wrote my first arrangement for my high school choir. We recorded it and put it on a record album and I was hooked!

Looking back at that arrangement, it was filled with a lot of problems that I wouldn’t be very proud of today 😬.

But I’ll be forever grateful for a choir teacher who overlooked all that and just praised me and encouraged me to keep composing!

Keep the music going...

After completing my composition degree and a teaching certificate, I taught choral music at both Jr. High and High School. Although my day job eventually changed from choir teacher to computer software, as my high school teacher encouraged, I have always kept on composing and arranging! A few years ago, I also completed a Master’s Certificate in Orchestration.

I have published several pieces with conventional music publishers. Some of these are advanced concert pieces, which I still like to write occasionally as well. Other compositions and arrangements are  self-published and are available on this website

My choral compositions have been featured at both National and Regional ACDA conventions and my compositions and arrangements have been sold and performed all over the world.

I have also completed a number of commissioned works, many of which are conventionally published, as well as others that are available for purchase on this website. Over the past few years, I have very much enjoyed completing commissions for a local Jr. High School choral program. One of these is the popular, Sing On!.

A Dream Come True!

Not long after I graduated, I dreamed of having my music performed by the Tabernacle Choir. I felt compelled to write a piece for men's voices called Awake, My Sons, Awake. I showed it to the assistant conductor of the choir and he loved it. The piece was subsequently scheduled for performances at the weekly broadcast and also the church's general conference.

Since then, a few other compositions and arrangements of mine have been performed at both the Tabernacle Choir broadcasts and general conference meetings. A dream come true!

Choral Music Helped Me Heal

In November of 2000, our family suffered a tragic and terrible loss. The days and years that followed shook our world and turned our lives upside down and things didn’t really begin to settle down for many years. We still deeply feel the effects of it after more than 20 years now.

One way I personally dealt with the many difficulties of those first few years was to write choral music. Some of my most poignant pieces came from the first several years following that tragic event: Mine Arm is Lengthened Out, Snowflakes, Some Rain Must Fall and After the Rain.

I have seen first hand that inspiring and uplifting messages joined with great choral music has a unique way of reaching in and touching people. It speaks to us in ways that no other medium can.

So, during a time when I needed it most, life-changing experiences once again came to me through choral music. Writing and hearing my choral music performed not only helped to heal me, but over the years, I have had many others reach out to me to let me know that learning, performing, or hearing my music performed has helped them to heal as well.

Those are big reasons why I love choral music and why I can’t help writing more!

Sweet is the Peace the Gospel Brings:

ENRICHMENT, INDEED!

"The violin obbligato helps to create a most inviting setting for this beloved hymn. I also like very much the harmony of the vocal parts and variation of texture from verse to verse! Thank you for arranging a piece worthy of the message."
