It Is (not so) Well With My Soul... Oops!

OK. I have to admit it... I'm a bit embarrassed. Recently, my church choir has been learning my SATB arrangement of It Is Well With My Soul. As we were learning it and I was staring at the score more intently, I noticed a handful of notation errors, typos, and voice leading issues. 😬

    Haste Makes Waste

When I first did this arrangement, I was on a very tight deadline, and I didn't go through my normal process of proofreading and editing. Oops. Some of those issues carried through to the new voicings and other new ones were introduced.

Yes, it's true... Rushing a job often leads to rework!

Here's a couple examples: 1) No words for the basses... oops, 2) Piano plays G# at the same time the violin plays an A ... a bad crunch. And there were a few other notation and voice leading issues.

    Rework!

So, I spent some time over the last week or so fixing all the errors that I found. I also took the opportunity to match words and punctuation with the version included in the first batch of newly released Hymns — For Home and Church from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Which also meant that I needed to update the files on my website and let everyone know that there are updated files. Which, I'm sure will be a cause of consternation for some if they need to reprint scores. For which, I am very SORRY!!!

    Lesson Learned (Again)

This isn't the first time I've learned this lesson, and it might not be the last. 🫣 But hopefully, I'll learn to think hard a few more times than twice about rush jobs and putting something out that that hasn't gone through a rigorous review!

You can check out my arrangement of It Is Well With My Soul here. Should be in good shape now 😉.
