Premier of new commission work, "Not in the Wind"
I just returned from a great trip to the frozen tundra of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the Minnesota Mormon Chorale premiered my new piece entitled, Not in the Wind. This piece was commissioned by their director, Erin Gray, to commemorate the Chorale's 10-year anniversary. Text for the piece is taken from verses from Doctrine and Covenants 19, 1st Kings 19, Helaman 5, and Psalms 46.
The premier was part of the chorale's "One Step Closer" concerts, which were held Saturday and Sunday, March 1st and 2nd, at local chapels.
Pictured from left to right is Erin Gray, Founding Artistic Director and Conductor, me (Lane Johnson), and Barb Thibaudeau, Assistant Director.
It was truly an honor to have been asked to write the piece and a thrill to be there for the premier performances. Erin and the choir gave me a very warm welcome, despite the very cold temperatures! Thank you MMC for a truly wonderful experience!
This piece hasn't been posted on my website yet. I need to make a few tweaks first, but I'll plan to get it posted as soon as I do.
Not in the Wind
Learn of me, and listen to my words;
A great and strong wind rent the mountains
And brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord;
But the Lord was not in the wind:
And after the wind an earthquake;
But the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire;
But the Lord was not in the fire:
And after the fire a still small voice.
A voice of perfect mildness,
As if it had been a whisper,
And it did pierce even to the very soul—
Learn of me. Be still and know that I am God.
